Update! (Dec 2010)

Newest (December 2010): I now have a number of emails sitting in my net address box from people who have been telling me of their experiences with BEKs... these are frightening accounts, most of them, to say the least. NONE of the accounts people have emailed seem to be without some grains of authenticity - although some seem to carry features of psychological details...no, I'm not saying some of these people are psychologically unbalanced... but rather that they've had extreme fright, trauma or something. This seems to be a common factor in both the newer accounts I've been receiving in my email boxes AND the accounts I keep reviewing online...

If ANYONE has more information on BEKs, just email me. I don't have any solid answers for the people who are already emailing me. The most I can do is "listen" and let these people tell me about their experiences when they're afraid to speak out loud about them.

I could sure use some guidance... I've looked into all the things that other people have already said and still, I am no closer to understanding what's going on with these BEK sightings and encounters...and I am leaving my last "update" posted below just so people can see that, well, I'm really not making any progress here.

Perhaps the BEKs are just OUT THERE... perhaps we won't figure them out - but I hope that's not the case...

Ohyeah - and Tee - from the accounts I've posted already in my article here and another similar article elsewhere - has contacted me just briefly...actually the contact was made via a comment section on an article, so I do believe Tee's account is authentic. I do not know what sort of child/teen or entity came to Tee's door several years ago but I do definitely believe the event was traumatic and frightening for her...

Previous Update (Winter 2009):

I wrote that I'd update if I found additional information.

I haven't found anything conclusive but I tracked down a gentleman by email who responded to some general questions I posed about BEKs and Brian Bethel.

I explained my interest in BEKs and my suspicions that these/this phenomenon is largely urban legend and the gentleman responded to my email in just over 24 hours - on Christmas Day 2009, no less! The person is a journalist and researcher/author, himself, who had been able to track down Brian Bethel several years ago about Bethel's BEK account.

Put it this way - I have been urged to research further, myself, before deciding that these BEK accounts are simply urban legend and nothing else. It was suggested that I do some research on "terrestrial" possibilities and that I contact people whose accounts are available online. I was told, also, to get in touch with medical people and theatre (?) people who are in the know about this phenomenon. The latter are harder for me to figure out how to approach but I'm working on it.

A second source from some online forums suggested I look into the topic of "Shadow People," however, I'm not willing to disclose this source because I'm not positive yet that the person is reliable (of course, I should be skeptical, right?).

I'm currently doing the research that Mr. O (don't worry, he won't remain anonymous - I'll put his Amazon book up somewhere on this hub for you - he's a researcher and author in paranormal fields, himself) has suggested and I have emailed Mr. Bethel but have not yet received a reply.

I'm trying to also track down contact information for 3 other main accounts that are commonly found online. If anyone has a line in or on this information, I could use some help.

The three accounts are as such: an account of a couple coming off the interstate in Michigan who encountered an odd female in a restroom who had totally black orbs for eyes, a young 20-something woman who encountered a man in Starbucks who had the same awful eyes, and the following (one I think will be more traceable than the aforementioned accounts):

Tee's Account. A woman who only identifies herself as "Tee," who wrote in to the about .com site following her frightening experience with a youth who seems to fit the same sort of description as Bethel's account of a boy with black orbs for eyes. Tee, an apartment manager refused to take this youth on a tour of a possible apartment when he knocked at her door one day. Tee's account can be found here:

http://paranormal.about.com/library/blstory_november04_30.htm

By the way, I'm not sure what to make of the information I'm finding yet. "Shadow People" are slightly outside of my realm of 'urban legend' research and folklore, however, if these BEKs are related to Shadow People - WE NEED TO stop being complacent and stop pooh-poohing things we do not understand as being describable by science thus far - and take better stock of what is around us in this world. That is, whether science can explain things or not.

I've had to take on a sort of chaotic "crash course" in paranormal topics thus far - and I have to say, studying urban legends and folklore is much safer, more comfortable ground! It appears that even if we can't explain 'shadow people,' something is going on that has DEFINITE effects in the world - at least on our psychological states...

This is all very strange research, I must say.

I'll probably have more definite information in another month or so.

BEK's a New Phenomenon

Referred to as B.E.K.s or BEK accounts (B.lack E.yed K.ids) in paranormal communities, stories of Black Eyed Kids are surfacing with great regularity these days.

These are kids with coal-black eyes, no irises apparent, no pupils - just entirely black eyes.

The BEKs want to get into your car with you but it seems they are not hoodlums...in fact, they are reported to be much more polite and well-spoken than most pre-teens or teenagers are - more self-aware, self-controlled and confident than most adolescents are. It seems that Black Eyed Kids are aware that they cannot enter your vehicle unless you invite them in. Some Black Eyed Kids want to enter your house. Nobody knowns what for...but they generally ASK VERY POLITELY to enter your house or car.

Few reports exist which tell of what happens IF one allows Black Eyed Kids into a car or house, but any who have reported interacting with Black Eyed Kids say that a feeling of impending doom or of intense fear and dread accompany the interaction!

Of course, it is believed that there's an unfortunate ending if you let a BEK in...it is something akin to inviting a vampire into your home - you perish!

Nobody, it seems, is quite certain of all the details yet...

BEKs Only a Decade Old

Black Eyed Kids are virtual babies within the realms of urban legends. Circulation of the stories about BEKs seem to be traced back only as far as about 1998!

Most BEK accounts are stories found online in blogs, message boards, newsgroups and the like. In fact, the first known posting of a BEK incident was posted by Brian Bethel onto a newgroup he was a member of. It was on January 16, 1998 when Bethel posted to his newsgroup, and other people have been coming forward ever since that time, relating similar accounts, all telling of Kids with Black Eyes who ask to be let into cars, houses, etc.

In most accounts, there are two males, aged from pre-teen to mid-teen years, and the boys always ask to be 'let in' to either a car or home. Sometimes this is to get a ride home or to be taken home so they can get money for a movie (as in Bethel's account). Sometimes they want to be 'let in' to use the washroom in your home.

A similarity in most accounts of BEKs is the impending dread and fear felt by the people who have encountered these strange kids - often before the people even get a chance to have a good look at the BEKs' faces clearly and see the black orbs of their eyes.

This Child Is Beautiful...But The EYES! This girl did not survive the toxins & hypothermia that made her eyes black. See caption area - no disrespect intended

This is the only known picture of a child with entirely black eyes - and this child did not survive a natural disaster whereby her leg was trapped and she was stuck in toxic water... this is what made her eyes black - & also killed her.

Brian Bethel's Account of Black Eyed Kids

On January 16, 1998, a man named Brian Bethel posted online to a newsgroup and told an account of his experience with a very strange and frightening male pre-teen duo. The kids had had approached his car and asked to be "let in" to his car. They spoke UNLIKE pre-teens usually do, using a more formal vocabulary than kids or teens usually use, and one of the most striking aspects of the event was the intense mood-altering 'air' that accompanied the kids' presence. Bethel asserts that an extreme fear overtook him while the pre-teens were standing by his car, which is something he found very strange and overwhelming.

Brian Bethel is a journalist - or at the time, he was a journalist. I have been unable to find much information on the man, himself, although his account of the strange interaction wtih Black Eyed Kids has been spread far and wide across the internet in newgroup threads, forums, blogs and articles.

I'll certianly update as I find more information on Brian Bethel, himself, but until then, his account is the data we have so far regarding a lengthy explanation of an experience with BEKs.

The Black Eyed Kids, According to Bethel...

Bethel was inside his car which was at a standstill in a parking lot in Abilene Texas. His trip out of the house was for the purpose of paying his bill for Internet services, so his attention was turned to writing out a cheque when two kids approached his car. The likely time of this event was around 9:45pm. Bethel remembered leaving his residence around 9:30pm to complete a 10 to 15 minute drive to where he could take care of his Internet bill.

On the evening in question, the film that was playing in a movie theatre nearby was "Mortal Kombat," and Bethel drove past the theatre in order to park in the lot, stop and write out a cheque. As he was writing, a knock sounded on his driver side window.

When he looked up, Bethel saw two children standing near his car and he deemed them to be around 10-14 years of age. Later, on his internet newsgroup post, he would write that the kids were in that "[...] semi-mystical stage of life children get into where you can't exactly tell their age."

Bethel refers to the children as boys, furthermore as "Boy 1" and "Boy 2" and has said that Boy 1 acted as a "spokesman" for the duo. In hindsight, Bethel would claim that Boy 2 never spoke, "at least not with words" during the incident.

The boys are described as:

"Boy No.1 was slightly taller than his companion, wearing a pull-over, hooded shirt with a sort of gray checked pattern and jeans. I couldn't see his shoes. His skin was olive-colored and [he] had curly, medium-length brown hair. He exuded an air of quiet confidence.

Boy No.2 had pale skin with a trace of freckles. HIs primary characteristic seemed to be looking around nervously. He was dressed in similar manner to his companion, but his pull-over was a light green color. His hair was a sort of pale orange."

Bethel believed the kids intended to ask him for some money, and just when he'd completed this thought, he noted, "then the air changed." He described an overwhelming sense of fear and unearthliness pressing down on him at this point of the experience.

The smile that Boy No.1, the spokesman, offered brought chills to Bethel's blood, and Bethel knew there was something not quite right about the boys and this situation. Even before he responded to the actual knock on the window, he felt his fight-or-flight responses rev up.

Bethel unrolled the window a little bit and asked, "Yes?"

When the spokesman smiled again, Bethel noticed that Boy No.1 had extremely white teeth.

The boy asked, "Hey, mister, what's up? We have a problem." Bethel said the boy's diction was quiet and calm but his voice sounded like that of a young man - not a child. While the boy spoke, Bethel remembers wanting so very much to just FLEE...but the spokesman continued to speak...

"You see, my friend and I want to see the films, but we forgot our money...We need to go to our house to get it. Want to help us out?"

In Bethel's account, he suggests more typical ways that children and young teens use language and the actual way that "spokesman" talked was not typical, in Bethel's opinion.

Instead, Boy No.1 spoke fluently, without any nervous pauses one might expect of a child who is asking a grown-up stranger for money. Bethel remembers only stuttering a reply like "Uh, well..." before noticing something like discomfort or nervousness from Boy No. 2's body language.

"C'mon mister..." Boy No. 1 urged, "Now, we just want to go to our house. And we're just two little boys."

Bethel remembers feeling that the spokesman's manner was all wrong - so was the 2nd boy's body language, but Bethel couldn't quite pinpoint what exactly was wrong about this whole scenario, so finally he asked the boys about what movie they were going to see.

"Mortal Kombat, of course," replied the spokesman, while the Boy No.2 that Bethel now calls 'the silent one,' simply nodded in agreement. Bethel responded to this answer with a simple, "Oh..." while he glanced at the movie theatre marquee and at the clock in his car. He quickly determined that Mortal Kombat was in its final showing for the evening and that it was about an hour into playing by this time.

While Bethel's reluctance to interact with the boys seemed to make the 'silent one' ever more nervous, the spokesman showed no nervousness at all. The spokesman continued to coax, "C'mon mister. Let us in. We can't get in your car until you do, you know." And with a more soothing voice, "Just let us in, and we'll be gone before you know it. We'll go to our mother's house."

At this point, Bethel locked eyes with the vacant-orb-eyed spokesman - while realizing in horror that his own hand had strayed to the door lock. Luckily the door was still locked, but Bethel's hand had started the process of unlocking the door before he caught hold of himself. He probably jerked back his hand upon this realization, alerting the strange pre-teen duo that he felt that all was not right in this situation. This action also forced Bethel to look away from the kids and stutter something non-binding and unclear.

He turned his attention back to look at the children and, for the first time, noticed their eyes...

...coal black...no irises, no pupils, and as Bethel wrote, "Just two staring orbs reflecting the red and white light of the marquee."

Bethel's facial expression must have conveyed something to the duo and the silent one suddenly dawned a look of horror, while the spokesman's expression turned to blatant anger, "C'mon mister," he insisted, "We won't hurt you. You have to LET US IN. We don't have a gun..."

These words were terrifying to Brian Bethel, and he tried to gain his bearings, reaching a hand toward the car gearshift in order to make a speedy exit...

The spokesman said, with great urgency, "WE CAN'T COME IN UNLESS YOU TELL US IT'S OKAY. LET...US --- IN!"

Finally, Bethel's hand responded on the gearshift, knocked the car into reverse and Bethel's car ripped out of the parking lot, "I noticed the boys in my peripheral vision, and I stole a quick glance back. They were gone. The sidewalk by the theatre was deserted."

Bethel drove straight home, parked and ran inside, all in a complete panic.

Bethel still wonders, "What did I see?" and "What would have happened if I opened my car door?"

My Suspicions

I have my own suspicions about the Black Eyed Kids as being the product of more parental and societal fears.

After all...the accounts I've read so far - of which the "Brian Bethel Account" is the most prominent - contain tell-tale signs of 'urban legend-ness' and tidbits of hysteria...in fact, in the Brian Bethel account, he has plainly stated the level of fear he felt upon being approached by Black Eyed Kids in an Abilene parking lot.

C'mon Brian! Scared almost to the point of poopy-pants by a couple of kids - one very well-spoken young gent that most parents would be proud to say is their own. Most parents are ASKING THEIR KIDS to display the sort of politeness that frightened Brian Bethel to the point of panic...

No, I'm not making fun of Bethel above...well, not overly so. I'm just saying that it appears he was THAT SCARED!

Something is out of sorts here - but in my opinion, it is possible that it might not be the kids in question here...

There's a small chance that these Black Eyed Kids are manifest from the fears of society and from parental fears...it is possible that societal PERCEPTION is at work here and going awry.

Putting two and two together - that 1) accounts of BEKs reek of urban legend tale format and 2) almost all urban legends are based on societal fears, parental fears, and fear of the unknown...

(Are we afraid that more and more of our children are becoming child-criminals, distanced in familial relationships? This concern would be fitting in societies where parents are no longer raising most of the children...where daycares, schools and such are taking up the slack for parental absence.)

These BEK reports are just something I'll have to keep my eyes and ears open for, that's all.

An Account of An Encounter Provided By "Michael" - a theory forwarded about BEKs possibly being "Demons"

THIS ACCOUNT was posted in the comments section but I felt I should move it directly into a HUB module so that it is not overlooked. Offered by a reader/commenter named "Michael."

Please note: I have taken the liberty of adding spacing simply to make the text and account easier to read...

By Michael:

So I apologize first off if I am restating something that has already been said. With that being said I understand everyones different beleifs in what these "BEKs" are and let me tell you that they are far more sinister and intelligent than you can imagine.

I have been studying in the feild of demonology for the past 5 years and have been through 24 years of supernatural hell, ranging from ghost apparitions to full on demonic oppression. These BEK's are without a doubt in my mind demonic. The way they speak with perfect diction and almost intellectual in their conversation being that most of these encounters have been with young children is quite odd for the language they use.

Having to be invited into a persons car or home and not being able to enter unless they recieve verbal invitation. And of course the biggest tell tale sign is the infamous "black souless eyes" acoumpanied [accompanied] by the feeling of dread and a dark evil presence. Your gut dose [does] not lie to you and even if you arent a beleiver in "evil" per say all the accounts still refer to the feeling of a "dark" presence when around these beings.

As far as the invitation goes it is also a telltale sign of a demon; demons being eons of years old and being as dark and powerful as they are still have to abide by cosmic law meaning that they cannot enter "your" property being your car or home or anywhere you have ownership unless you where to give them verbal consent(Now you know where the vampire myth stems from). The reason why they usually appear as children is to gain your trust. Obviously you will feel bad for a poor lost child and would love nothing more than to let them in on a cold dark night....that's exactly what they want. Or sometimes appearing as young teenagers or a person of your own age, someone that can gain your trust easily. Their not going to appear as a crazed dirty man weilding a knife, scaring people off would work against them.

The dark feeling you get when there near, your body can sense something that wants to do it harm and it reacts by sending you into a fight or flight mode. These beings are filled with so much hate and evil that it emotes off of them like a black aura, hitting you with waves of their emotions. The reason for the black eyes is obvious, being evil in nature and being void of any soul, their eyes are just showing you the emptiness that is inside. If you have ever heard the term "the eyes are the window to the soul" that would explain the empty black, these beings have no soul.

The reason behind their odd speech and diction is like I stated before, these beings have been around for thousands of years, they are not a child as they appear to be. They are unfortunatley smarter than humans and they speak as well educated people because frankly they have had time to practice. I also would bet that if anyone where to begin speaking in another language that these BEK's would respond in that language, even if switched up to multiple dialects I bet you they would follow with even better pronounciation. Unless they catch onto what your pulling and play it off seeing that your testing them.

The reason for the fowl smell from their breath or just the smell of them as many have stated is also demonic in nature, the putrid smell of garbage or decay in many cases sulfur. These are the scents of a demon, just think of the most revolting smell you can think of...thats what you will smell when near them.

Also I havent read this alot in the testimonies but they usually are preseaded with 3 knocks on either the door or the window, obviously many have just run into these beings but if that dose happen I urge not to answer their knocking because opening that door or window is all the invitation they need.

Now to say that these things are pure demons in their corporial form or possibly possesed humans that we truthfully wont know. But I lead more to the first only because its practically unheard of for a innocent 5 year old could come under possesion but then again we cant prove that for sure. I apologize for the mispelling and if what I wrote is comfusing but Im typing this at work and trying to do both.

Your Views on BEKs

I think that Black Eyed Kids are:

  • BUNK - pure bunk! People are letting their imaginations run rampant
  • I'm not sure. BEKs should be investigated further before I form an opinion
  • Totally TRUE... I've seen one/them!
  • They're evil entities from another planet
  • They're a new form of alien
  • They're just kids in black Sclera contact lenses
  • They're like Shadow People - stay away from them - don't let them in!
  • They're some form of demon - don't invite them in!
  • They're intra-terrestrials - always been here - people haven't been reporting them 'til now
  • I have another theory which differs from anything here - see comments section

Marine in NC Spooked by Black Eyed Kids

A marine living on the 3rd floor of barracks located near River Road at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina encountered two BEKs in November 2009. The marine's account can be found by going to the paranormal section at the About .com website.

Apparently, the marine was staying home on a weekend late in the year of 2009 while most of his peers were out. A knock at his door interrupted his movie watching late at night. The marine went to the door, expecting to find that his room mate had forgotten his keys, but instead of opening the door to let his room mate in, he stood face to face with two kids: "[...] these kids freaked the hell out of me."

At first, the marine couldn't place the reason why these two kids made his senses react with trepidation, but instincts are something that marines are told to pay attention to, so the man didn't let his logic overcome his gut feelings in this instance. Something from within told the man to shut the door and lock it but he fought these feelings long enough to get a good look at the kids, notice they had pitch black eyes, and he spoke briefly with them.

The kids told him they wanted to come inside and read and said they were cold. It seemed odd to the marine that the kids didn't mention parents or things that a pair of lost children might be concerned about.

Unnerved, the marine glanced down the hallway to see if anyone else was around but he found the hallway empty. When he turned attention back to the kids, they had come a step closer to him and the doorway, further freaking him out. He describes feeling as if he were being hunted - as if he were the prey for these predator kids. This last complex gut reaction caused the marine to immediately close and lock the door.

For about 5 more minutes, the marine reports he heard a constant, soft knocking at the door. After refusing to respond to the knocking, he then heard a rattle at a window - which he also ignored. Things seemed to settle down after that and the marine got through the night without further incident.

In the morning, the marine found and approached the officer who was on duty during the night time hours and asked him some questions. The officer had noticed nothing out of the ordinary while on shift and passed the marine's account off as the marine having taken too much to drink. In the marine's account, however, he makes sure to state that he wasn't drinking at all during the night in question.

I think some important questions to ask are:

  • Would parents allow kids to just wander around an infantry army barracks?
  • Why didn't the officer on duty notice the kids?

The marine who provided this account to About .com is known only as Reaper 3-1, and obviously prefers to remain anonymous.

Black Eyed People Like To Shop At Wal-Mart?

Webb City, Missouri

An anonymous writer: was at a Webb City Wal-Mart ready to pay for some items and got an uneasy feeling while in the teller's line-up. The person also smelled a strange odor and turned to look around. Right behind, there was a man, dressed in black who was very tall. When our author/Wal-Mart shopper looked at the eyes of the tall man who was dressed in black, the eyes were completely black. Our shopper got the sense that the black eyed man was evil and hair stood up on the shopper's neck: "I got the sense that he was evil, maybe the Devil himself."

This is pretty much all there is to this particular BEK experience. This is a three (short) paragraph account I found at About .com. The person who offered this story to About .com isn't named.

At a Wal-Mart in Kansas:

A person shopping at a Wal-Mart in Kansas got separated from daughter and mother, ending up in the perfume aisles. The shopper got a strange gut feeling first, then began to look around. The shopper saw a man walk past the aisle who had striking features (in a striped shirt, blonde, tall, good looking), who appeared clean-cut but who had a strange gait. Right after he passed the aisle, he stopped and walked back to it and turned his head to look at the shopper who describes these actions as robotic and odd.

The shopper felt the man with the strange manner of walking was looking right through, scanning, surveying and taking in knowledge of our shopper, and his eyes were totally black and unnatural. The shopper felt great fear and had the feeling of being in danger. The strange man turned his head again and walked away, still in the stilted, jerking manner.

The shopper says it is the eyes that will never be forgotten out of the whole of this experience and is convinced that the man was not even human. The shopper found daughter and mother and left the store shortly after this encounter and calls this incident, "[...] one of the most unnerving experiences of my life."

(one more wal-mart account to be typed out soon. just checking to see if the one I found online matches up with someone who emailed me with a similar account but who wanted to remain anonymous)

Black Eyed Kids - Poetica

I was browsing and reading some interesting articles and poetry at Hub Pages and came across epigramman's poem about Black Eyed Kids.

The poem isn't extremely long but it's fitting to link to:

Black Eyed Kids - a poem by epigramman

It's a reasonable length for a quick read but still packs a punch and says what needs to be said, describing fear and dread, a rapping on the door and the need to stay away from Black Eyed Kids!

Thumbs up!

Thanks for sharing a great poem, epigramman!

"I have my own suspicions about the Black Eyed Kids as being the product of more parental and societal fears."

Way interesting take on this, Mythy. I've read about this before. I'm with you, on your suspicions, because it's not like you hear of someone running into a B.E.K. as often as they do a bigfoot. ;D

Thx lxxy! I'm still researching on this Bethel fellow. It seems he has made a few other curious posts before which don't turn up easily in regular searches. I've had to follow links and links and links - but he posted a far-fetched 'one' in a forum a couple of years back...about a dream he had when he was a small child...more scary stuff - can you imagine? Muppet faces turning evil and talking to him from the TV screen...it might be that Mr. Bethel has a very active or over-active imagination.

Hysteria does strange things to people - I still maintain that most scary stories and legends tell us much more about the individual or society who speaks and tells the stories...

I think the BEKs are 'possible' but they are SO NEW - they have to be investigated much more - and may turn out to be OUR FEARS projected onto innocent children...this has happened before - remember Hansel and Gretel? Cinderella? Little Red Riding Hood? Adults turn children into evil or in the least, unworthy nuisances, when adults become fearful about living and about life's trials. * Note: Children adapt wonderfully to change much of the time... adults fret and fear change and prefer to stay within the comfortable world they've already made. Holy cow, this is worth another hub, isn't it?

Damn us adults!

mistyhorizon2003, have you seen any BEKs around?

Could you tell me what your source for the Brian Bethel post is. I'm looking for an original copy for research purposes.

If you know of one, please visit my site and send me a message. Thank you!

Mr. Clemens, I was at your site to attempt to contact you but after clicking around for some time, could not find an email contact for you. "Comments" are not prohibited at this time on your site, so I hope you'll revisit here for the following links and explanation.

Brian Bethel's account has been broadcast widely amongst newsgroup users as his first account of his experience with BEKs was during a time when newsgroups and text-forum formats were a little more popular than they are now. Mostly, nowadays, Bethel's account is copied and pasted on paranormal sites, forums, info-sites etc like the following:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2320527/p

The Black Vault wiki is short on Bethel information but large on outgoing links:

http://www.theblackvault.com/wiki/index.php/Black_

.....except the first link to Brian Bethel's account is not working anymore. The site I first read of Bethel's account was at that link, which leads to "Obiwan's UFO-Free Paranormal Page at ghosts org: http://www.ghosts.org/

Black-eyed kids are real... Black-eyed people are real. I know because I was once one at the age of 15. There's nothing paranormal about black-eyed people and all these crackpot theories are rather disconcerting to say the least. Any one who was in the least attentive or reflective would realize that, when subjected to high amounts of stress or "self-infliced excellence" (I term this, in general, "character") the eyes will become black; the more stress and the longer the stress is maintained the blacker the eyes. When thresholds of this stress are crossed the eyes expand while remaining black. Taken to the extreme the product is a very intellectual individual with a vast understanding and horribly black eyes. Even when you feel happy, calm, pleasant, etc. inside the eyes are always horrible and typically don't reflect the sentiments that the face is expressing at the times it expresses (e.i. they can smile but the eyes are unchanging).

I don't enjoy railing on people for their belief, but the lore behind what some would have as "black-eyed 'demons'" is mundane and the truth of the matter overwhelmingly evident. I genuinely hope this Bethel reporter didn't actually believe in ( or convince himself of) his stories of black-eyed people.

When I was (completely) black-eyed no one would stare me in the eyes. I'd walk down the halls of the school and people would ignore my eyes; those brave enough to even begin to stare in their vicinity would immediately look away, those unable to mask their emotions having a look of pure terror on their face. This eventually irritated me because I knew I wasn't any better than any one else. that every one has the same inherent potential. This aversion to my eyes also branded me as an outcast when I probably needed other people more than at any other time. Because of this irritation and in a kind gesture to the people who couldn't tolerate my eyes, I developed the habit of having my head to the ground and of never looking any one in the eyes. I retain this habit, fostered out of kindness and not shame, mind you, even though the black-eyes are gone. Perhaps this rather lengthy post will convince some one to look with their eyes rather than allowing every fancy to take them.

As a post-script, I can provide a life-consuming excercise to "get" black-eyes that I know works for a fact (though you can get black-eyes by many other ways, it's never easy: hole yourself up in a quiet and, ideally, secluded area. Make your whole life reading. Read until you pass out or until the words are past making sense. Do this every day. Develop the habit of waking up and, without hesitating or a thought to spare, picking up a book and reading. Eventually you won't ever have to take a break (short of eating, going to the bathroom, and sleeping; read while you eat). More importantly, as you progress, concentrate more on the words than the story itself. Maintain this unhealthy, compulsive lifestyle for four months. You will want to give up. Be strong and don't. You'll eventually hear a voice; it certainly isn't natural, the isolation and mental labor you'll be going through. At one point in time you'll "become one with" or do away with the voice. The real aim of this excercise isn't to get such black eyes, but to increase the vistas of your mind greatly. As I said, there are many other and many healthier ways to get black eyes; the excercise I posted is merely a sure-fire way. In truth, you can even have eyes and a mind with much more powerful effects on others; I'll leave those new worlds (seeing as this article treats with the supposedly paranormal, not 'worlds' in the literal sense... for the truly brave to plunge, for near that point you are fully independent and capable of learning of these worlds of knowledge.

And how old are you now, Soldatenhandel? I mean, how long has it been since you had these black eyes when you were 15?

I find your theory about stress causing the eyes to both expand and blacken very interesting. Do you have a name for this theory or is there a place where I can examine some arguments related to this theory?

What is the purpose of your postscript - the exercise for getting the eyes to go black? I mean, if you're obviously ridiculing other BEK theories ("There's nothing paranormal about black-eyed people and all these crackpot theories[...]") and have the answer about this phenomena and also say it is an awful thing - why give 'instructions' about it?

What an interesting line of conversation. I've seen dilated eyes in birds and people with an optometrist.

While "black eye" contacts could be partly to blame, the original fellow who posted his story went all the way back to 1998, before the cosmetic contact industry really took off.

I do believe, though, that if he has made some other interesting claims, such as his Muppet nightmare...most likely these kids were suffering from stress, or probably even LSD, mushrooms, what not have you. Cough syrup. You name it.

And for the original author to be filled with dread at this sight....well, it's no stretch of his imagination.

Hey lxxy, thanks for stopping by to offer your opinions on things related to Bethel and the black eyed kid phenomena in general. You bring up something important: the sclera/black eye contacts weren't "popular" or easily accessible at the time Bethel voiced what happened to him.

Ah - the Muppet nightmare... yes, Bethel has said some odd things prior to his B.E.K. statements, in 1994, when he was about 22 years old. He recounts a waking nightmare he experienced when he was about 4 or 5 years of age, whereby he saw "evil muppets" on television...and the event actually sounds like a poltergeist experience...

Bethel, however, has been largely ridiculed for both the "muppet nightmare" and "BEK experience" stories. Personally, I think Bethel has been honest about his experiences and I dislike the fact that so many people have ridiculed him...

It is interesting that you mention LSD, mushrooms and cough syrup as things that might make kids' eyes appear "black," lxxy, but still, focus on ridiculing Bethel (not by you - just in general) takes a lot of energy away from finding out WHY a bunch of kids are turning up in BEK encounters. If a bunch of kids are running around on LSD, that's a whole other problem in itself that people seem to shrug off in preference to calling Bethel a "nut" or other derogatory things...

Mythbuster- thank you for the research and information, but I don't think that it was necessary for you to make fun of Brian. It was too much and you kept going. That wasn't very nice. How would you have reacted if you were there and in the very same situation? I wish people would think first and not try to make fun of someone..

Hey susanlang, thanks for commenting. I may have made a small "funny" but it's nothing compared to the ridicule that others have directed at Bethel. I may consider revising but I believe I have represented the Bethel account with all serious throughout most of the hub. I do consider that Bethel legitimately felt he experienced what he wrote about, however I presented more than one viewpoint here. Readers can make up their own minds.

Hi there all. I am the Tee in the story above. I encountered the BEK in 2004. I see it is still being circulated.

It was one of the most terrifying things I had happen to me. But it is totally true and the fear just from being even close to this kid was horrifying.

Evil permeatted from this kid. The eyes were hypnotic and I felt I couldn't even look into them for fear of my life.

Strange but this is true.

I want to say that I'm latina and I have black eyes. That is my pupils are not visible ever. Except the optometrist has no problem finding them when I go for an eye exam. However, I was called to the fact that my pupils weren't visible in 4th grade science when we were supposed to dilate a buddy's eye using a flashlight and write about what happens. My partner got upset because my pupils were not visible (still aren't). The teacher just told us what to write. I have to say that no one's been frightened by my eyes. I have to believe that it is the evil behind the black eyes or that the sclera is black as well. It's not just black eyes.

Hello Luckyangel, thanks for stopping by to read and comment. A lot of people have black yes that don't freak people out like the BEK eyes do. I think your last two points are pertinent here - the sclera of the eye being black in BEKs and the sense of evil that comes along with BEK encounters.

Nattefrost 20 months ago

Alright I've come across BEK yesterday and probably have found every single story by now. Here's what I think...Please keep in mind I don't want to make fun of, nor offend anybody by my opinion.

BEK stories seem very interesting, however, the whole thing, when you take into account of how it started and only after the first "report" encounters began to escalate seems a little sketchy. Here's what I mean, let's say I go online and make up a new urban myth on some forum, making it to be whatever fascinating experience I've supposedly had. Now, how much do you want to bet that in the near future there will be other stories online with people claiming to having same exact or quite similar experiences? (Keep in mind I made my story up) I would bet my month's salary on that. And I am 100% sure, I'll win that bet.

If one guy writes about his extraordinary experiences, what stops others, of the millions of internet users from making up similar experiences and posting them on the web, just for sh*ts and giggles? Logically speaking among those millions of web users we could def. find a few of such individuals.

But my main point is: when you take into an account, all the "experiences" that people swear by they've had, such as: alien abductions, ghosts, poltergeist, demonic possessions, stigmata, shadow people, out of body experiences, extra terrestrial beings, men in black, black eyed people, vampires, zombies, big foot, and the list could go on and on. All of which there are accounts of online of people claiming that they or someone they know have had one of those experiences, don't you think that in that kind of world, every single one of us should have "gone through something"? However it is very unlikely, it only happens to people when they are alone, when there are no other witnesses, and there's never any case of physical evidence, never any solid proof. The only thing we can do is either trust that individual or not.

I do love all these stories, they are very entertaining and intriguing, but how could I go about taking them seriously if I've never gone through anything like that, and there was never any solid scientific proof of any of such occurrences. Of course we can talk about governments trying to cover it up, and all these other conspiracy theories, but again, when you try to put some logic to it, it's nothing but fairy tales.

The truth in my opinion is that our mind often plays tricks on us, due to chemical imbalance mainly, and many other factors. Our vision often plays tricks on us due to its reliance and control of our brain, which again is highly affected by chemical balance, lighting of the surroundings we're in, etc. So far it is known that we can only perceive the world around us in 3D, so it is possible that there could be plenty of things around us that we simply can not see due to our "design" and I am not denying the possibilities. But let's look at the hard evidence, physical facts, that we can comprehend and perceive clearly; and if we do, we'd realize that in the end there is nothing that we can hold on to in such cases, except for our own beliefs.

mythbuster profile image

mythbuster Hub Author 19 months ago

Hello Nattefrost - thanks for stopping by, reading, and commenting. You make some very good and detailed points about our minds playing tricks, our vision playing tricks (often, these "experiences" are Pareidolia phenomena of our own vision/brains). However, there are several accounts of multiple witnesses that I am still interested in learning more about and I think people should take these BEK accounts seriously - at least for the fact that to many of the witnesses, SOMETHING traumatic has happened. What they perceive is taken by them as "true experiences."

Nattefrost 19 months ago

I agree, and I'll keep checking this out, and keep checking on your page here, keep us posted with new discoveries.

mythbuster profile image

mythbuster Hub Author 19 months ago

Nattefrost - Thx for checking back again, too. I tend to avoid standard "debunking" and minimizing things down to mere scientific "data," as I believe that human experiences with things such as ghosts, shadow people, UFOs, extrasensory perceptions involve other "ways of knowing" that science cannot manage as an "ultimate authority." There are peoples' emotions, psychological make-up, sociological factors in all human experiences and I feel that science tends to examine the trunks of elephants, so-to-speak, and conclude, "there is no elephant here - just a trunk of some sort" if you know what I mean...

Interesting that no one has really mentioned the fact that the black eyed kid seemed to be trying to hypnotize Mr. Bethel into letting them in and it almost worked. But it does seem like a more modern version of an old urban legend. Something my dad used to tell me

Here is a link to it, but the version that was told to me the driver had all black eyes and he tried harder to convince the person to enter. The potential victim almost listened without realizing it like they were being hypnotized. Of course my dad could have just embellished on it and he liked to tell the story like it happened to him or someone he knew.

Hey = Nice work, evvy_09. Thanks for the link. I'm still reading but the stories seem to have a connection about someone being "coaxed/hypnotized." To me, this is the primary similarity between "The Coachman's Warning" tales and BEK phenomena... No, I don't have a hub on The Coachman's Warning yet but maybe it's time to make one as the tales from the link you've provided prompted me to remember other versions of similar tales I am not seeing detailed at Snopes.

Cracked 19 months ago

I found this story on another website discussing BEK's. This is one of the creepiest encounters I've read.

First, a quick intro about myself. I’m a 26 years old, male. I work at a small private college in Michigan. I’m a normal, average guy. I like hockey, HBO shows, kayaking, and hiking/camping. I have a girlfriend, love my dad and sister, and have a pet dog named Bear. While I keep an open mind, I don’t believe in ghosts, aliens, big-foot, and am not even too sure about God. The way I see it, if I haven’t encountered it first hand or seen documented, verifiable proof then I keep a healthy amount of skepticism. There is one thing I do believe in now that I never did before, hell I didn’t even know about it before – black freaking eye kids.

As I said earlier, I love(ed) to hike and camp. For reasons too introspective to get into fully here I just loved the solitude, peace, and serenity the outdoors provided me. My life is not overly stressful, chaotic, or dramatic, but every once in a while a man needs to get away from it all. Being alone in the wilderness gave me the opportunity to clear my head, be introspective, consider the facts of life. I loved the beauty of the natural world, and I try to appreciate the small and big things, from the smallest clover to the biggest mountain. Beauty is all around us. In a way, I think it’s my belief in beauty that has helped me cope as well as I have with what I’m about to share. In late August of 2010 I set out for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore located along Lake Michigan. I had schedule five days off of work, and I planned on making the most of it. Sleeping Bear is one of my favorite parks in lower Michigan. I know it to be a great place for some solitude, and having usually been abandoned by sun worshipers by mid August I knew I’d have most of the park to myself. So, I wasn’t surprised when I arrived the fist day, found my usually parking spot, a sand parking lot just yards from the lake, and didn’t see another person. As I sat on the hood of my car, overlooking the beach and the lake, I remember breathing deeply and saying aloud “thank God for solitude.” I ate lunch, walked down the beach and put my bare feet into the water. Cold. Very cold. It didn’t matter to me though, because I didn’t come to swim. I came to hike, and to camp. I came to, as was my tradition, sit by a warm fire on a cool night, sipping on my flask of whiskey, enjoying the sounds of the forest. However, this peaceful tradition didn’t happen. The proper procedure when camping at a state or national park, if you’ve never been, is to check in at a ranger station. There you pay your fees, obtain your backcountry pass, if you’re going to be camping in the backcountry as I always do, and give the rangers your information: license plate number, make and model of your car, etc. After my quick stop off at the beach to eat my lunch, I headed to the nearby, a fifteen or so minute drive, and get my affairs in order. The Platte River Ranger Station is manned until mid October, I think, so it was open and I didn’t have to travel to the main station a ½ hours drive north. I park in the station’s parking lot, and walk into the office. The ranger and I speak for a little and he asks me for my license plate number. I knew he was going to ask, but I still forgot to write it down before I went in, so I walk back out toward my car, and I see two kids sitting at a bench just in front of where I’m parked. They weren’t there when I parked, and I didn’t notice them when I walked in to the station, but at this point in time I’m still on cloud nine. I’m happy to be on vacation, so I take no real notice. I walk to the back of my car, jot down the license plate number and walk back to office. I take care of business in the office and step out and walk to the connecting bathroom. The backcountry area I’m staying at, White Pine, has a pit-toilet, think port a john but just with a deep hole in the ground, but I’d like to use a real bathroom while I can. I go into the restroom and go into the empty stall. As I’m taking care of my business, I hear the bathroom door open. I hear whispered voices. It’s a small bathroom, but I can’t make-out what the voices are saying. I can tell they’re kid’s voices though, and I figure it’s the kids I saw near my car earlier. No biggie, right? I finish up, and open the stall door. Sure enough, there are the two kids standing outside the stall. I remember saying, “it’s all yours.” As I walked to the sink. The kids just stood there. When you think about it now, in reading, the situation seems a little spooky, but at the time, and if you were in the situation yourself I’d bet that you wouldn’t be the slightest bit worried and neither was I. I was my hands, and glance in the mirror, only to notice the kids are looking right at me. This is the first time, but certainly not the last time, on this trip that my spine tingles with fear. The god damn kids have completely black eyes. No whites to their eyes at all. Like I said, this is a pretty small bathroom and they were not more than three feet away. At first I can’t do or say anything. I am literally frozen with fear. The water runs over my hands, but I can’t feel it. I’m so deep inside my head at this moment that all I can hear are my thoughts, which were something like “Ahhhhhh!.” All joking aside, I was petrified. It was only when one of the kids, a brown haired boy that I would guess was around twelve took a step toward me that my fight or flight instincts took over control from my fear. I turned off the water, why I bothered I don’t know habit I guess, and moved a step back from the kids and toward the door. Seemingly sensing my fear the boy didn’t take another step toward me. Instead he stopped, on retrospect I can guess he was trying to keep from frightening me too much – didn’t work kid! “Can you help us?” That’s what the boy said when one of us finally spoke. For a moment I did want to help. I consider myself a pretty nice guy. I’d go out of my way to help pregnant women carry groceries to their car. I’d rescue cats from trees if the situation arose, and for a while I thought that is why I wanted to help those creepy kids. I thought, my sheer decency was what made me, despite my better judgment, and despite my fear want to help them. Only since I began researching the BEK’s do I realize that I didn’t want to help those kids, but whatever, magical, mystical voo-doo, power they have made me want to help them. I can’t tell you with any certainty how long I stood motionless thinking about helping those kids, but it seemed like an eternity. Finally, like a physical shaking of my brain I said “No, Not right now. I gotta go.” And then I left the bathroom.

I remember in that two seconds my back was turned on those kids to me leaving the bathroom I felt certain I was going to die. I thought as soon as my back was turned they were going to tear me to shreds. It was with knee buckling relief that I left the bathroom and walked out into the midday sun. I walked the fifteen or so feet to my car, on noodle like legs, too afraid to look behind me. I fumbled for my keys and unlocked my door, sat down, closed the door and locked it. Only then, in the safety of my locked car, did I feel safe enough to look back toward the bathroom. Damned if the little bastards weren’t standing just outside the bathroom staring at me with the big, black soul sucking eyes. I want to take moment to explain a little bit more about myself. I’m not a big man, but I’m not small either. I’m six foot, with shoes on I always say, and am around 185 pounds. What I’m saying is I can take a couple twelve year olds in a fight (I assume, having never actually fought any twelve year olds since I was twelve myself). In my hiking, I’ve encountered odd people before. I’ve turned a bend in a trail only to startle a huge grizzly bear. I’ve been lost, once, and ran out of water, once, and I even had a tree fall in the middle of my campsite during a gale swept night in Tennessee –as I was drifting off to sleep! However, not a single

Thanks for the link to the rest of the account, Cracked. What a terrifying situation - a long-term (over a couple of days/nights) or multiple sighting (being followed by BEKs) is frightening to even imagine!

What seems most awful about the whole account is that the BEKs seem to have followed the camper/individual who went out camping... mind you, at one point, the man "invited" the two BEKs "in," so-to-speak. Likely, this is why they ended up following him out to the camp area deep in the woods.

Creepy.

I had an encounter with a young man with solid black eyes. I was working at a community days event at a booth promoting health insurance for the company i worked for. A young man with black eyes, and longish dark hair stood in front of the booth, and stared at me. He smiled and I was immediately frightened. I tried to avoid his gaze, and I tried to pretend that it didn't bother me, hoping he would leave. He never said anything to me, but I felt that he knew my thoughts. He also could tell that I was good, and he wanted me to know that he was evil. He left after few minutes. This was in summer of 2004 near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Walt, thanks for stopping by to provide us with your opinion. You're definitely not the only person who feels that these BEKs are conjured by the mind or an overactive imagination. I definitely do think these stories are worth examining, however, because many people considered "stable" of mind and who are called "logical" thinking people by their friends have experienced BEKs.

Very interesting details you've shared here, "Curious." Your account is similar to many I've encountered, particularly in this "fear" or "dread" you seem to have felt when this black eyed person was standing near you. Any idea of the guy's age? You used the descriptor of "young man." Are you using "young man" as a term to be polite in place of "teen" or a similar young age? Or do you think the individual was the age of a "young man," say, 20-ish or 25-ish?

By "young man", I meant early twenties. That was the only time I have ever seen a black eyed person, but he made such an impact that I have never forgotten about it. For some reason, the other day, it kept popping up in my memory, and I googled it, and ended up on your site. Very interesting.

Hello Curious - thanks for returning to drop down a few more details. In all my reading, I'm coming up with almost no "young man" types around the early twenties age group, so your details are very interesting to me. I've taken note of a few email accounts (stories related to me by email) and such that contain "young adult" types but mostly, "Tee's" account ("Tee" an apartment manager who wrote to about .com regarding her experience...saw approx 17yr old male who frightened her very badly - black orbs for eyes, etc) is one that tells of one of the oldest age groups usually mentioned in a BEK account. Most eyewitnesses are saying they are approached or see pre-teen children or people 17 years of age or under.

There's one well-known "Starbuck's account" where a young lady spotted a strange man (definitely not a child) who had pitch black eyes and seemed to communicate telepathically... she left Starbuck's immediately and did not look back.

Curious 18 months ago

No, I definitely wouldn't classify him as a kid or a child. Who knows, maybe he was a creep in contact lenses. I don't know, but he scared me to the core. Thanks for all of your research.

Rob 16 months ago

I had an experience in 1993 with a black eyed person. He was around 17 (my age at the time) and alone. My friend and I were driving after school and we came to an intersection where this person was standing in the grass off to the side. It seemed odd to stand there because there was no sidewalk. As we got close he turned towards our car and I (in the passenger seat) made eye contact with him. I instantly felt the fight/flight response because it was as if he looked through me and knew my thoughts. I've never been so intimidated by a look before or since. I'm now 34 and still remember it clearly.

I don't believe other accounts of asking for rides, etc but I know what I saw. His eyes were all black.

Michael1387 16 months ago

And of course the biggest tell tale sign is the infamous "black souless eyes" acoumpanied by the feeling of dread and a dark evil presence. Your gut dose not lie to you and even if you arent a beleiver in "evil" per say all the accounts still refer to the feeling of a "dark" presence when around these beings.

My encounter:

I was getting ready to go to the post office and I'm playing out in my head moonwalking down the driveway. As soon as I open the door I noticed this kid standing in the street directly facing me. He then immediately moonwalks down to the end of my next door neighbor's property and then runs off laughing. This left me half startled and a little 'just a coincidence' type of feeling. I didn't get to see his eyes, and didn't feel threatened, and his intent was mischief.

As for the black eyes thing, wide eyes with pupils fully dilated and pale skin are signs that person is really agitated and ready for flight or attack. And a person's instincts are telling them just that when their hairs stand up or something, according to 'Manwatching: A Field Guide to Human Behavior.'

Your account fits in with much of the other stuff said about BEKs.

Hmm you may have encountered a teen prankster, not a BEK?

'Hmm you may have encountered a teen prankster, not a BEK?'

Never got to see the eyes, but he looked like a typical skater teen and that it appeared that had read my mind. The only thing missing there would be the somewhat unearthly appearance.

Hmm 15 months ago

Ok, this not really anything new. Black eyes where originally tied to the MIBs of ufo lore. I guess the shadow people and BEK are just newer versions.

" ...and stared at her steadily with his jet-black eyes, grinning all the while."

From The Mothman Prophecies - John A Keel

http://books.google.com/books?id=RHlpjud_K14C&prin

Just do a search with 'black' or 'Apol'

John Keel, Jacques Vallée, and a few others thought these were the activities of government agents with the main objective being to deliberately induce paranoia in certain groups.

Note: Historically just about all of the activities were carried out by low level informants and not the agents themselves. So kids certainly wouldn't be omitted, especially if their parents are the official informants.

When 'xfiles'came out, I bought 3 books on ufos and related material. And when that mothman movie came out in 2002 I went and bought John keels book the movie was based on. Since the net came into vogue, though, I mainly mainly just use forums and blogs.

Does anyone know anybody who studies things like this. I'm kinda an amateur in occult studies and have been obsessed with BEKs when I first read about them more than a year ago. I have kept a log of every story I have found pertaining to these BEKs. Where I live frowns on even the thought of demon study and anything not related to the church, so ANY infomation on the occult is rare around here. The web only has so much, so if anyone knows a good book, website, or even a person to contact, it would be awesome. Please and thank you.

Hello, Sketch. Thanks for stopping by. I don't know anyone who is an actual expert BEKs, sightings, or who can even explain their existence. Like you, I've been searching online for a long time, collecting information about these BEK accounts. I think some people who have experienced a BEK encounter have had a legitimate and traumatic experience while some experiences are hoaxes. I don't know what more to tell you. I keep writing about BEKs in the hopes that people will talk about the topic and use critical thinking regarding the topic of BEKs. I get emails from people via hubpages - people who say they've seen a BEK - and I treat those emails as legitimate as those who have written so far seem genuinely shaken by the experiences.

My man that picture on top of your page was a little girl who died shortly after that pic was taken. She was trapped for days in toxic water after a earthquake. The pic gave me the chills because of the fact that this kid had to face death so young and her Terrible physical state

In Texas I was walking out of a little family owned gas station when I got about 8 feet from the door in walks this man and woman they looked to be in their forties and BOTH had Completely black eyes (no whites visible)they were dressed in clothes that looked way out of date like from the 30's or something. I had to walk by them to leave the store when I got near them they stopped walking and just stood and stared at me and I stopped and stared at them. I didn't feel any fear and I didn't feel scared. I felt like they wanted to tell me something. I noticed that their clothes smelled Really old. They were both wearing brown colored clothing the man a suit made in thirties with a hat on and the woman had on a long brown skirt and short brown jacket like top and they both had on old looking shoes from like the thirties. I don't know who they were but, I definately had a feeling they were not from earth!

A very interesting experience you've shared, Sue. When did this event happen? Was this in a known area to you or were you just passing through this location in TX? I wonder if anyone else from the area remembers this same couple, dressed in old clothing...

amy 14 months ago

I have read a lot about these BEK's, and am truly interested, amazing stories and information you have here, but just want to say... that photo you have there of the little girl should really be removed regarding this issue because that picture was taken during a natural disaster, dont know where, dont know when, but her leg was trapped under the stagnant water and she had been there for a few days. Her eyes are like that due to infections caused by the filthy, bacteria ridden water. she later died, so I think to have that photo in this discussion is a bit disrespectful.

Sorry to be a pain, but felt kind of sickened to see that worldly renowned photo, knowing the story behind it, on a discussion like this.

Ok now on to the subject in hand lol. I have only read accounts about BEK's from America and a few in Australia,do we know if there are any in the UK?

Amy, I have been trying, for about 6mo, to find BEK accounts out of the UK and haven't found much information. Will you be signing up at HP so I can keep in touch with you if I find something?

(I'm looking into the possibility that BEKs are an American phenomenon - or at least the language surrounding them is... and that some accounts in the UK of grays/strange humanoids are actually different ways to describe BEKS)

Wow Mythbuster ... when I was a little girl I would see many crazy things that up to today I wonder if they were real. when I was at 7 yrs old ... I was sleeping in my own room and bed but ended up in my parents bed but before waking up there ... I remember floating in the air outside my windown looking onto traffic ... I really can't explain it as I saw it and still see it in my mind and memory. I use to see witches and scary things that again I repeat I wonder if they were real or just my imagination or mind playing tricks on me. Till today I see things and my boy friend makes fun of me ... which is nothing to be made fun of ... I'm a very curious person and I would love to come across a BEK ... I know that I will probably be scared out of my ass and probably pass out but I'm willing to face many people's fears ... I have a friend who is reading the BEK book and I can't wait to read it as well ...

TLC 14 months ago

I had two experiences and with two different people I knew, they were elderly woman in their mid 60's, both eyes turned completely black. They would blink in a middle of a conversation and their normal human eyes would change. No contacts and no changing of stressed eyes, it was not human. If anything it was pure evil, I felt the need to run and get far away from this person in both occasions. Oddly one of the woman is my husbands Aunt. I cant bring myself to ever see her again. I felt it was a demon. In both instances the woman appeared to be very kind elderly woman until I saw the Black eyes. Now I question overly kind people thinking they are a demon. I have encountered many Phenomenon prior to and after this experience. My husband and I and our children have experiences and we are Christians. I am so fed up with the devil. Praise Jesus!

Gboogie, what you've described of experiences when you were young sounds like lucid dreaming or something. If you're still seeking out a BEK experience, might I suggest you learn much more about these first? I hope your friend will be able to lend the book to you soon and that there is some information in the book that will be helpful for you.

TLC - have you spoken to other family members about the aunt? Have other people seen the black eyes and felt dread as you have?

baal 13 months ago

I haven't read through all of this but a search of something from my past I was curious about brought me here.

When I was a teenager I would have lucid dreams involving an elderly couple with solid black eyes that would stare at me and laugh. The dreams were quite terrifying and I would wake up sweating.

The odd thing is the dreams would happen months apart. I would say there were a couple that were even longer than a year between.

After high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps. This is when I had the last of those dreams. In it I found myself riding as a passenger in an old car driving down a country road with no houses. It was overcast and clearly autumn as the trees had already changed. I heard the familiar laughing coming from the driver's seat. I turned my head to see that old man with those eyes looking at me and laughing. At first I was paralyzed with fear again. Then I clearly remember thinking in the dream to myself "Wait a second. I'm a U.S. marine." and decided I was going to attack the old man. I awoke instantly. I felt angry and sat up with my fists clenched looking around the room. Then I realized what had happened and that it was just another one of those dreams.

That was 15 years ago and I have never dreamed of those black eyed elderly people since.

Maybe that isn't helpful information concerning the topic as my experiences were only dream related and you are speaking of actual real encounters of people with black eyes. Or perhaps there is some connection. I don't know.

So, this Bethel character lives in Texas, and he uses the term "cheque"? (more than once?) Highly unlikely, unless he's also claiming he just moved there from Canada or the UK.

Interesting that nobody ever heard of such a thing until him.

Also interesting that the people who claim to see or encounter ghosts used to see whole filmy people, now it's anything that reflects light. Any speck of dust reflecting back at their camera lens is "proof" of an encounter.

Our fellow humans are full of crap. Just because the real world isn't as exciting as the X Files, people have to make up stuff to get attention. And unfortunately, sucker a bunch of the eager and easily fooled.

Soldatenhandel 9 months ago

"Yep 3 months ago

Believe in what I do because any other explanation is wrong. That is the topic here."

That sums up the human condition nicely as well.

mythbuster 16 months ago

"And how old are you now, Soldatenhandel? I mean, how long has it been since you had these black eyes when you were 15?"

I'm currently nineteen and enlisting within the Army's Special Forces soon.

"I find your theory about stress causing the eyes to both expand and blacken very interesting. Do you have a name for this theory or is there a place where I can examine some arguments related to this theory?"

Eh, it's not theory. Rather fact; stress and low-light environments cause the iris to dilate. Constant and high levels of stress or low-light can lead to very queer effects (such as entirely black eyes or (believe it or not) purple eyes-which can be seen in those who have grown accustomed to night-time conditions).

http://www.livestrong.com/article/127113-causes-di

"What is the purpose of your postscript - the exercise for getting the eyes to go black? I mean, if you're obviously ridiculing other BEK theories ("There's nothing paranormal about black-eyed people and all these crackpot theories[...]") and have the answer about this phenomena and also say it is an awful thing - why give 'instructions' about it?"

Because by saying just that maybe some one of the armchair speculators that will likely read this will try to get black eyes themselves and so come to know the truth. I really hate to sound like a know-it-all... in fact, I make it a point to abstain from that in reality. But... sometimes people going off on wild tangents about faery circles, alien angels and the like can just get to one. Hypocritically enough I like to research these very things-- not out of any vested belief, but simply because fantasy is a welcome reprieve from the harsh finality of the real world.

On a side-note I used to watch "The O'Reilly Factor". Coming back to this page made me remember a particular episode that I had watched half-a-year ago: in this episode was a U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. His iris had expanded enough to render his eyes entirely black except for a very slight and hardly noticeable band of white sclera on the utmost periphery of either eyeball. While this means his eyes weren't wholly black, that is the closest media display of anything even approaching someone with eyes that are completely black that I've seen.

And, in parting, I really wish I could at least make an attempt to explain why people feel such dread around people who have NATURAL and WHOLLY black eyes... but that's just one of those things that I'm not articulate enough to put into words. It's just... something you have to feel and utilize the effects of to fully understand. Sorry to all those black-eyed kids out there who are tired of the negative publicity, hopefully in the future this phenomenon will be given some earnest thought and so seriously researched to clear up all this "black-eyed people are demons/aliens" offal.

my story :

im 16 almost 17. one day i walked into school...the first week of my junior year. i walked thru the doors with all kinds of different thoughts going thru my head..not really paying attention to things around me. I step thru the door...all of a sudden my mind went blank of all thoughts seemed to disapear. five seconds later i look up and a ALL black eyed freshmen boy was staring at me he had nice blue jeans, shirt, shoes and hat.very attractive. when i walked thru the door our engergies somehow regongnized each others..for some reason i wasent afraid or scared.I was more hypmotized by his presence and aura. everything about him was instantly perfect. he had a cockyness to him i liked. a mysterious intreging boy.. ..i continued walking but kept staring at him....i couldent look away. Now im going to back up a second and tell a little bit about me..I beleive in the supernatural, in demons, in god. I am an indigo child and have the gift of being able to sense different energies and emotions quickly and more in depth then our natural human instinct. Iv been like this sience birth and have only encountered this once but have met similar souls. I believe they arnt demons but lost souls waiting to be found. reborn to find their purpose..to have another change...the black eyes are a portrait of the souls heavy regret and dispare from past lives.

mythbuster profile image

mythbuster Hub Author 4 months ago

You provide a very interesting argument about BEKs, Onceuponatime35. Why all the dread surrounding these beings - if they are merely lost souls trying to be reborn? What do you think they need in order to be reborn? Something that resonates with me at your mention of "souls" is that many people, in describing their experiences/encounters with BEKs say "Black orbs for eyes/soul-less eyes."

Thanks for commenting and for the persuasive argument. I hope you will return to say more.

Onceuponatime35 4 months ago

they are trying to get over a traumatic situation that happen in there present life and can not and will not for eternity....such as a murder. the dreadful energies are spread out to the world thru their aura so they have a persona of dread surrounding them they are trying to be reborn while still being in their human bodies.

the only thing they need to be reborn is time..

lexi 3 months ago

im 17, and i am very interested with all this paranormal stuff. i have never encountered anything, but i do enjoy reading about it. but one thing i find that doesnt make sense about the beks, is that i really dont believe they are harmful. i do get that people sense a feeling of evil when around them, but the more i read, the more i think that their purpose is for something other that to kill.

when first reading, i only found stories about a bek approaching the person when in their car or house, ect, and asking to be let in. and of course, they can not come in unless given permission. no one ever invited them in, so no one knew exactly what would happen to them if they did, but they were sure they would die.

well after reading about these, i became a believer. but after continueing my research, i found stories of people encountering beks out in the open, and now im not so sure what to believe.

if the beks only reason for existing was to kill, and thats why they always asked to come in, then why didnt they kill when people encountered them out in the open?

this just does not make sense to me.

i do believe that beks are out there, but i really dont think they are evil.

Hi lexi. Thanks for stopping by to comment and share your thoughts on BEKs. Hardly anyone has any well-rounded theories on BEKs but more people seem to think they are very dangerous than not and more people than not also seem to believe they are evil. Annon 3 months ago

Hei. I was reading up on the black eyed kids and I stumbled over a blog which has two posts, which are not about them, but mention black eyed children.

This blog is rather odd, makes you shiver and wonder, if you have the time to read it all.

Anyway, the first reference to the black eyed children is in a post named “old town” – which is about the town of “Sighisoara”, where Dracula was born. (Vlad the Impaler). Apparently there’s strong evidence in that part of the world, in old manuscripts, of a tale which spans over 2000 years, a tale that relates of how the town was built. It all comes down to the fact that apparently a black eyed child ordered the town to be built in that exact spot.

You really have to read the whole post to understand, otherwise you will think it’s just weird talk.

The other post which relate the appearance of two black eyed children, aged around 16, is called “no good deed goes unpunished” – and talks about how two black eyed children kissed a 1 year old boy and apparently healed him from leukemia. They also put a necklace around his neck.

Again, you have to read the whole post, or the whole blog, to understand. The blog is not about black eyed kids, but I found references of them inside it and I feel that they are somehow players in a much bigger scheme that we could fathom.

Check it out.

Oh, this is the link to the first post http://onvampires.wordpress.com/2012/02/06/old-tow

If you feel like reading the whole blog, make sure you read the “about me” or “who I am” page and the very first post. Won’t make any sense if you don’t.

I just thought to share this with you because I’m as interested in black eyed children as you are.

I'm investigating black eyed phenomenon because my girlfriend says that several times before we had intimate encounters that my eyes turned black. I asked her, Do you mean my pupils were dilated? No, she said, your eyes were completely black including the 'whites'. I asked her if she was frightened by that? She said, No as I also had a beautiful smile on my face. This is the first I'd heard of this & will have her take a picture of my eyes next time she notices they are totally black.

Padawan 2 months ago

My encounters with BEKs began in the summer of '01. I was 21 at the time and awoke one early morning very drowsy. I walked to the dresser mirror and was horrified by my own reflection. My skin was transluscent showing my veins with almost a glow, and my eyes were completely black. The pure dread was indescribable, and I sat in horror for several minutes.

There was a feeling like I had been blind for my entire life and in a moment had the ability to see. It was overwhelming. When I gathered the courage to look at myself again, I had returned to normal.

About a week later I awoke late in the night and was drawn by this new feeling to walk into my backyard. Waiting for me was a 20ish, thin, pale blonde(yellowish white hair) woman. She faced away from me until I was standing beside her. When I looked into her eyes they were entirely black. She said "I've missed you," but her eyes also seemed to have a commanding welcoming force over me. I took her hand and we began to run. I know that we moved impossibly fast. I am unsure how much time I spent with her, but she conveyed sorrow while telling me that I wouldn't remember that time.

I have only shard this story in confidence with one person before. For the next three years I found myself confronted with paranormal investigators, self proclaimed psychics, demonologists, and self proclaimed demons. I was like a lightning rod for the paranormal. With this attention seemed to follow increasing intense negativity in normal and abnormal ways. I was being followed and watched regularly by a growing number of shady characters.

In 2004 I moved very abruptly 1000+ miles south. I was in a rural, almost remote area. Things were calm for nearly a year until massive packs of coyotes started making my house a nightly visit. As they encroached it was as if my new sense could feel them. They would howl in a unison that sounded like a scream, and wouldn't stop unless I went outside. When I would go outside I could see and feel their glowing eyes trained on me, some would pace, others would be still. The coyotes would do this at least 5 times a month for the next 8-9 months. One night I heard nothing but felt like they were right outside my door. I walked out and saw a human figure standing about 20 feet away pacing much like the coyotes. The figure was very tall and thin, wore a kindof grey jacket, pants, and hat. It was like a 3D shadow. I noticed as it stopped pacing and stood still that it had no legs below the knees, or they were somehow transparent. I couldn't see the face. The figure invoked a great fear, but I approached it. It began to run without moving its legs, and it moved with an unnatural speed away from me as it vanished into some dark woods.

Once again I moved far away. I am in a much more urban center, and have attracted little attention like before. I have just discovered that BEKs are a thing outside my experience. Part of my fears the phenomena, and regrets posting here, as I feel it could reinvoke the negativity storm. Part of me yearns to see the one that took me for a "run" over ten years ago. I am reluctant to give locations in comments, but have seen some familiar ones posted above. I am seeking information just like much of you.

I have my own theory. But its kinda hard to explain. Ive been researching bek's for a while now. Im 16 now and ive been having the same nightmare for the past seven years almost every night. I havent heard of bek's since about 2 years ago but in my nightmare theyre there. But theres a lot of them and not just a couple. I find it wierd that ive dreamt about them for five years BEFORE i even knew they exsisted or were made up or watever. But im writing a book about my nightmare. I cant really explain my theory but ill explain it in my book. Im a talented reader and will be writing it from their point of view to show my theory. Ill comment on here again to tell yall wen u can view it to tell me wat u think. By the way, my names emma. Oh and another thing that i find wierd which may or may not have anything to do wit bek's is that...well...ive always had these things. Ever since i was about 4 or 5 (which is the youngest i can remember anything) ive seen things. Wierd things and it might sound really crazy but i see dead people and usually how they die too. Itss usually wen im awake and focusing on something like zoning out. Its like a faded memory playing out in front of me. Also, wen i dream and dont have the nightmare about the bek's, well...my dreams tend to come true. To the exact movement and sound. I usually forget about them but wen they happen i get migranes or siezures. My doctor says he has no idea wat causes my migranes or siezures so ive come to believe that its not really something since or medicine can explain. Just like the bek's. Well im rambling. I just wanted to share this info and ill post my book wen i finish it. Maybe in a month or two. But itll only be the rough draft. Well bye bue now. :)

i had an experience about 10 years ago with this. i was with my then best friend and we were trying to find a way out of her new apartment complex. there were several gated entryways and i pulled up to one near the back of the development. the gate didn't move, so i figured the motion detector must be broken. then i heard my friend gasp. i looked out ahead and saw a teenaged boy with a black hoodie and baggie jeans. he had very blonde curly hair sticking out of his hood. i felt a need to get out of the car and see if he was alright for some reason, but i didn't. i just sat there and starred at him until he jerked his head in a most unnatural way to the side. i jumped back in my chair and asked my friend if she saw it.. it was then that i noticed he had fully black shark like eyes. my friend said "get us out of here." and i did as fast as i could. i had no idea this was a phenomenon that others were experiencing as well until now. really creeped out now.
