The Hat Man - The One in the Wide Brimmed Hat
First of all, there is a consistently reported phenomena involving a shadow entity in an old styled hat. Then there is a phenomena involving a shadow entity whereby eyewitnesses often mention a "Fedora" or similarly brimmed hat. The latter is the scarier of the two and actually, the plain hatman doesn't seem to bother or upset most people who report an encounter.
The plain hatman sort of acts like a ghost and is often seen just standing around. Its form may simply fade until the eyewitness no longer sees it, and it has no apparent reaction to people. For example, people have reported 'coming upon' this shadow person shape and having the shadow do absolutely nothing for seconds of minutes, then it may move around a bit and just fade away, as if it can't detect the person who came into the room and just saw it. This form of shadow entity is often thought to be the same as a ghost by those who study this phenomenon. It looks sort of like a ghost, with the shape of a person who is wearing an old style - always an old style - hat. Unlike a ghost, however, whose facial features you might be able to see, the plain hatman shadow person is a dark shadow with no detailed features. Just the shape. Its shape may not be well defined, but is definitely "person-shaped."
The above details of a plain hatman are not the sort of hatman that people are worried by. In fact, the above sort of hatman is one of the most common that is sighted and many people just think the encounter is a rather 'curious' event.
The other type of Hat Man terrifies people in every instance of an encounter. Also, this other type of scary encounter always mentions a distinct kind of hat, too - a Fedora-styled, brimmed hat. This type of Hat Man is the kind that people like Jason Offutt (author of "Haunted Missouri" and "Darkness Walks: The Shadow People Among Us.") and other researchers are trying to find out more about.

Hi, the hub I posted about just about a day before I saw yours. I was very excited and even show this hub to my husband. He agreed we might have saw what others have. Great little article. It seems far too odd that the human subconscious would collectively see shadows of different hatmen, unlike the primordial fear that is associated with the old hag when you wake up unable to move.
lxxy, thanks for your comments here. I agree - it's too odd that so many people see the hatmen and describe these entities so similarly (exactly?) during waking moments. In most accounts, people report that they haven't been "sleepy" or close to "drowsiness" when they've encountered a Hat Man shadow...plus - Hat Man (men) have been reported very often - during the plain daylight hours.
Often, with the "old hag," people do not report seeing anything but have "impressions" and "feelings" that someone is present, pressing down on them while they are trying to wake from sleep... with most Hat Man encounters, the visual effects are usually the whole focus and people who report Hat Man events are in moments of alertness.
Curiously, I have noticed many Hat Man reports involve someone who was involved with an act of concentration just prior to seeing a Hat Man... such as studying, "looking for something" etc., and they end up spotting a shadow entity. I am wondering if, in part, even though this isn't a 'sleep' thing, if the people are in a sort of self-induced trance... but I'm still looking around for more information. ie: perhaps some people who can hyper-focus are those who often see Hatman entities - perhaps they are seeing something that is always there which most people overlook?
I like coast to coast when I get to listen to it. My mom & I was driving one night and I seen a guy running from the field like some one was chasing him- I slammed my breaks on thinking he was going to run out in front of my vehicle but its like he disappeared right into the embankment!
Well, I had been haunted by "hatmen" from the time I was 10 or 11 until the time I was 30. It was extremely frightening and just aggrivating after a while. Im not sure who they are. I always had two a taller one and a shorter on be at the end of the bed. It was at its worst when I was 15 or 16 that entire year was terrible. Who are they and what do they want. I always chalked it up to the diagnosis I got which was Narcolepsy and these were Hypnogogic Hallucinations a symptom of narcolepsy but if thats the case then why so many people seeing the same thing?
I didn't start looking into this until like a week ago when I heard the term used and it brought shivers down my spine.
GabbiXue, similar world view can account for people seeing the same thing in a number of cases. That is - in places where similar beliefs are held (ie: knowledge and or belief in Christian explanations of the world, heaven, hell, spirits, God and demons) can mean that many people have similar thoughts or conceptions about our world...thus, if what runs through our imaginations is similar, we can sometimes believe we see demons in a way that is like most people envision demons in the same culture. This, of course, won't explain every instance of sightings of UFOs, Demons, ghosts, hatmen, shadow people, etc., but can definitely be a sound explanation for why many people seem to describe the same things.
He is black. He is about 6 foot tall. He wears a long coat and a hat. He has no feet. He glides through the air. He will get your attention. You will understand his message. Who is the man? I call him the death angel.
Growing up the family would share stories about "the man". Saying that he would come visit a family member before someone would pass away. Kind of like a preparation for the family or a warning some may say.
I am one of the gifted ones in my family that was blessed to see the man. I remember sitting in the living room floor folding laundry. I got up to put the towels in the closet and I see this thing coming down the hallway. It was a black shadow, kind of like a silhouette of a man in a long coat and a fedora hat. He went in the bathroom and disappeared. I too disappeared, right out the front door. I knew what had just happened and I was home alone. I stayed outside until my mom came home. I was 9.
This is one of many times I have seen the man. The only time I felt fear was the first time I seen him. I've seen the man for a period of eight years as a kid/teen.
They nothing more than demons(wicked angels) pretending to somthing else.They get a delight out of scaring and possing people and or pretending to be dead humans,and ofcourse,people who believe false teaching of dead human spirits.They also pretend to be ufo's too.Thats all they are,wicked,falling angels.Now,i hope i cleared that up for you,case closed.If you want more questions,just ask me.
Nikko, thanks for your perspective on hatman/shadow people. I'd like you to lead me to some proofs of some sort that what you say is true - that all sorts of phenomena are merely demons?

Sorry for the late reply. How many times would you estimate you saw the hatman? Were there any indications that the shadow was "aware" of you - or do you think the phenomena was just some sort of impression, over and over again?
The bible should be all the proof you need,if you read and know it..2 corinthians 2:11.. that we may not be overreached by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his designs.
Thank you Nikko, I'm glad the Scriptures are "proof" for you, however, many who have experienced shadow people may not agree that the entities they've encountered are demons.
No..A few people i know,plus others i heard about had had these things happen to them,and once they found out what it (shadow people) is(demons,they took the next steps on getting rid of them and now enjoy peace and happiness from the true GOD,who the demons are afraid of..My spiritual brothers and neighbors can tell you and they all realized what they were seeing was demons and took steps on getting rid of them.They told me alot about what them demons did to them..The many people you said had experiances dont understand what they are seeing,but im a light bearer,and i shine light to people for they can see the right path in this dark world.I open eyes too,but there are many of my brothers,who i learned from,that shine light for people and know more than i do.

I'm pleased to know I'm not crazy!! I saw this "Hat Man" several years ago when I was a teenager.
I got home from school one day and it was really hot, say 3pm. No-one else was home but me. So I locked up the downstairs of the house and went upstairs to have a shower to cool down from the walk home. I was in the shower, washing myself with soap when I saw in the corner of my right eye a HUGE dark black shadow taking up the whole door way of the bathroom, I FREAKED OUT!! I turned to the doorway and it had disappeared!! It was a 7-8ft large figure of a man wearing a trench coat and hat like Dick Tracey, no face or features, just a HUGE black figure, I think back now and I can't really recall, but I think he had something in his right hand (my left) but not sure what it was as I only had a split second look out the corner of my eye. I jumped out of the shower, wet and covered in soap, and to my horror I had to run out the doorway in which I saw it!! I was so scared and it still frightens me to this day! I think I was so scared because A. I had just seen this huge figure and it diappeared, and B. I had a really bad feeling once I saw it... I can't explain, but I just had to get out of there. I got downstairs and opened the whole house up, and ran outside with the phone and called my mum to see how long until she would be home from work, whilst all this in going on I could feel my heart ready to leap out of my chest... As I have played around with things I know I shouldn't I felt something was coming for me. I've never seen it since and I pray I never do!! Amazing to read all the stories and descriptions, so eerily similar, too much for a
con-incedence I say. I was so scared when I typed hat man in google and pics came up!! It's exactly what I saw, I remember referring him to a Jack the Ripper type look to my mum and friends, but no-one beleived me and thought I was just imaginging it....

Kelly85, did this incident happen to you recently? I'm not sure what you've described is coincidence, either. Many people are describing much the same type of hatman as you have on this page.
I saw him when I was 19. I wont forget him or at least I know he hasnt let me forget. Jessica Beil is coming out with a movie this year called " Legend of the Tall man". It reminds me of the hatman. I think this guy has a hood on his head but my brother saw this type of shadow so the hatman and hooded man must be best friends. lol I dont know how I was so lucky to see the hatman. I feel he wanted to take me somewhere. I felt a pull of some sort but I rejected. I have heard many stories and I wonder if anyone felt what I did. Hes got some power. Its a force of the worst fear he can drive into you. I was drinking alot at that stage of my life and after I saw him I was really freaked. I got real sick after seeing him too. My liver was failing from drinking. I stopped drinking as much and it felt it was a warning of some kind. Like I better straighten up or die and go live with this evil man. he was ready to take me. I felt it. I wish somebody would research this and try to put this together for real. There are so many skeptics. He is very real and you wouldnt know it unless you saw him. Those who have seen him know what I'm talking about. We arent crazy. Somethings going on in this world and we are too dumb to figure it out yet. I have my guard up so I hope I dont see him again! I am constantly looking for him wondering if he will show me something. I dont think a day or night goes by that I dont think of him. Its like he branded me for life.

I really believe what you say is true, Ginger - we need to start learning more about and paying attention more to the world around us and realize that our living human forms aren't all there is in the world.
Your account of the Hatman is similar to other accounts I've read where Hatman seems to be a messenger or something like Charon/Kharon the Ferryman (Greek mythology, the Ferryman in the underworld who brings the dead into where they will reside in the undead world), whereby Hatman seems to be awaiting the death of the person who sees him. Your mention of addiction is also right in line with other accounts of Hatman as the Grim Reaper, waiting for someone to expire - or prompting people to hurry up and die by their bad choices or else make better choices and live life fully and reasonably.
I understand from your words that you made a decision to stop drinking after seeing Hatman - for this I applaud you. Welcome to recovey and a glimpse of sanity. I had to select a better pathway, too, and I remember the darkness drinking leads to.
A few questions I hope you'll browse back to and answer: what was the difference between the hooded hatman your brother saw and the one you saw (ie: hood vs hat only or was there a difference in mood/dread/fear present during each experience)? How long between these individual sightings? Have you discussed the sightings at length with your brother?
mythbuster - As I said it was several years ago, say 2000, so 11 years ago now. And as my comment does state "too much for a con-incedence I say" means that I don't think it is a co-incedence! So not sure if you read what I wrote properly, doens't look that way, lol
I think I read what you wrote in the way you intended, Kelly85, I was re-affirming what you said about your experience not seeming like pure coincidence since what you've described has also been described by others. The only thing that worries me is that I haven't read a lot of accounts outside North America and your experience happened in Australia... interesting.

The 'Hatman' phenomena is diverse in its ramifications for different people. Is it something in the collective unconsciousness, shadow entity's from a parallel dimension or something else entirely? The way you keep one foot on the ground while stepping forward with the other is very commendable myth and its researchers like yourself who one day may be able to give man-kind a definitive answer.
I am so glad I came upon your article. My son who is now 16 has been seeing the "hat man" for years. He also "sees" other ghosts as well but this is the only one that has no facial features and he can not make out anything other than the shape and it is a man. He can make out the hat too but this is the only one that he can see that bothers him. I had no idea that other's see him too. This is very interesting but even at 16 he is afraid to sleep alone because if he does he awakens to the feeling someone is watching him and then he sees the "hat man" and he is always standing at the foot of the bed...then slowly makes his way out of my son's room. We have dealt with him "seeing" ghosts ever since he was about 2 years old and we are still dealing with it today! It's very sad that even in today's world he can not tell anyone for fear they will think he is crazy. Nice to know that there is others who have seen him as well :)
Hi lifeshouldbefun - yes, a whole lot of people attest to seeing "hat man." It's no joke for most people, so tell your son to ignore anyone who will not listen to him - and go elsewhere to friends who are supportive. The biggest thing I have been hearing about as successful when trying to stay away from hatman is to build solid self-esteem, spirituality and to maintain reasonable relationships. It seems that loners and those having troubles with esteem, addictions, and those dabbling in the dark arts without the necessary spiritual base and experience to explore those arts - have the worst experiences with hatman.
Thanks Mythbuster. He is very spiritual as is my whole family so I'm not worried there. He is very active with friends as well, he is a very good pitcher for their high school so he's popular at school so I don't think the self asteem really affects this situation either. He is sort of a loner at times so that may play into it but like I said he won't go to his room alone unless he has a friend over and they go with him or he makes his younger brother go. Our whole family on my side of the family have some sort of gift in some way or another so this doesn't freak me out the way it would most just frustrating that there seems nothing I can do to help
lifeshouldbefun - perhaps your son will soon find a spiritual mentor who can help him protect himself during his "loner/alone" moments. Popularity isn't necessarily an indication of esteem ie: many popular persons have a charisma that others are drawn to, yet the individual may still "feel" some lack of esteem inwardly... too many unanswered questions in vital topics can be easily covered by a smile and active engagement with other people. Not saying your son isn't confident, generally, just sort of coaxing for you and family to continue to be accepting (as you have stated you already are) of your son's gift, strengths and even limitations. A certain fear your son might have about going to his room alone might just be enough to be drawing questionable entities/things to him... sooner or later, we all have alone moments where we can only rely on self to cope. Has your son tried assertively telling whatever presence he has felt - to flee from him - and that it/he/she is not welcome near him? Another tidbit here - to show an example of misunderstandings concering behaviors/presentation: I am viewed almost unanimously among my friends as an EXTROVERT - because I enjoy people, engage in discussions on various topics, do public speaking and participate in regular discussion group meetings - however, I am NOT an extrovert, no matter that people view me as "engaged and participatory," "friendly and easy to approach" when out in public or in public groups. At a certain point, the human interaction actually DRAINS me right out and I start feeling near to VIOLATED concerning my time, space, personal information and even thoughts (which is the opposite of extroverts - who typically feel more energized through interactions). I often need to isolate at home for a while and avoid human contact until I feel my energy is replenished... Just an example for you if it makes any sense or helps. Due to my being an introvert - definite loner - I take extra care with my spiritual safety. Your son might need to develop some "safety planning" around being alone in order to feel confident when he is alone.

I have personally gone over with him about protecting himself with imagining the purest white light surrounding him and filling him up, prayer, and asking for these "things" to go away. Unfortunatley he can do all of them but ask them to go away. He said he was afraid they would answer him or speak to him as many of them do but this "hat man" he is the most afraid of. We did have a really hard time about a year ago when seeing a little boy who also wouldn't talk..the only thing my son told me about him other than what he looked like and dressed like was that he couldn't see his eyes and he just would stare at him and not talk. Becomes very frustrating when you hear your child yelling for you from one room away and there seems nothing you can do to make it stop. He doesn't talk about it any more even when brought up but I know it's either stopped and he's just still having the effects of remembering and not wanting to be caught off guard or he is saying that because it's easier to deal with. I have really enjoyed your feedback! Nice to be able to share everything and not worry about an reprocussions of discussing such a sensitive subject that not everyone agrees on. ha my son used to say he saw a man in dark wearing a big hat from when he was real small and whenever he got up-set strange things would happen around the house but i am so glad that it dose really exsist as i thought i was mad when i too saw it in his bedroom in the middle of the night when it was only me and my son there thanks very interesting
i seenshadow people all my life they would ran iwould chase when i was in kindergraden. now i see them again shadows as well as a real life person. in mexico i saw a little girl about 10 years old stright black hair, skinny and as well standin stright behide the door were it didnt go all the way back. i been seeing alot more now. as well as oncein my room i felt a persence in my room playin withmybangs i would see my bangs float inthe air. stayied still and prayed untill itfelt me alone. once i tooken pictures and soo many ghost n shadow people. no one has seen them but me n my cusion has seen the pictures my mother eased some n me. my cusion that lives in front of me saids he seen some n heard noises at his house. i really dont know what to do. o I CAN ONLY SEE THEM WITH THE CONOR OF MY EYE.I LOOK STRIGHT THE DISSAPPAR N WITH MY CONOR OF MY EYE I SEE THEM. lygra, some people say that children don't have all their "filters" up yet like we adults do and that it is important to listen to what children say they are experiencing - before social conditioning and reprimands teach children to just stop telling about how they experience the world. Wow was that sentence long enough or what? lol
One evening just as the sun was setting, In Escondido California, I was about 10 years old. The house we lived in at the time was a corner lot, with a large back yard and a tall wooden fence that went along the side of the back yard, to the house behind us. The house behind us was also a corner house, facing a busy street.
I was riding my scooter around the front corner of my house, along side the wooden fence, when suddenly I saw someone round the busy street corner. Suddenly I felt a strong sense of fear, and panic. He was about 6 feet 6 inches or so, in a trenchcoat, with a hat, but everything else was indescribable. It was all pitch black and blended together, I could not really tell the difference or describe the rest of his clothing. He didn't seem to have a face either. He was walking straight towards me then pulled something out of his pocket. It was shiney and silver, I thought it was a gun but after researching this (I'm 18 now.) It could have been The Hat Man's famous pocketwatch.
Anyway, I turned around and slowly rode my scooter back around the front of my house, then quickly ran inside to tell my parents. They didn't really believe me so they didn't get up from the dinner table. I ran back into the living room and looked out the window, to the corner in front of my house and saw the man standing there... looking away, but still standing there. I turned and called for my mother to come and see him, and by the time I turned back (Which took probably about 2 seconds total), he had dissapeared. At that point, I assumed he was just some creeper. Some random person maybe. But now after listening to Coast to Coast, and doing quite a bit of research, I am convinced that I was visited by the Hat Man. Unlike a lot of people, I have only seen him once in my life.
Now I am a very spiritual person, and have researched MANY different aspects of nature and energies and spirits. I come into contact with spirits and energies almost daily, but never seen The Hat Man again. I hope I do not cross paths with him again however, just the feeling I got as he turned that corner was enough to send me running back home.
Halloween 2009 me and a group of friends choose to go walking through a graveyard late at night, at first we're all point out funny shadow monsters kind of like making shapes out of clouds but then I spot a fat man in an old style hat, it was like those golfer caps and he was standing over a grave and to make sure I'm not crazy I ask people is there someone over there? And we all saw it! So just to prove it wasn't actually a real person we go right up to it and sometime between us walking from where we were and walking to the grave it had disappeared in the blink of an eye.
This was a very surreal feeling for us, none of us could beleive what we all just witnessed

Have you and your friends who witnessed the fat man ever considered checking in your town/district history at your local library or museum - or talking to someone in your area - about ghosts and legends? It would be interesting to know what your local history is to see if anyone else has seen a ghost, apparition, shadow person or reported similar sightings like you experienced with your friends in 2009!
I have seen this thing too I don't like to talk about it it but I have when I was Pregnant with my 2nd child a girl she is now 13. I was walkin on the road and was walkin a distance to my mother's place and I could see ahead down the road a figure so I kept walkin thinkin I was meeting up with someone From where I'am from as it came closer I noticed it was not touching or bouncing as a normal person would. And then I got scared turned around and walked away faster I was eventually running as I ran at least 3 mile's I was gettin out of breath,I screamed at it to go away. it mimicked everything I did. and I made it back to our place and I met up with my boyfriend and he seen it we tried to look under it's hat and it was moving it's hat so we weren't able to see under it. from the way it looked there was nothing under it's coat or hat. it stood at the end of the driveway we went inside our house I was freaking out n crying my boyfriend and his dad were watching it and when I went to our back door the thing turned and kept going towards south ever since then I haven't ever been outside alone and that's 13 years ago. it never made a noise the only noise I could hear was my heartbeating and breath. happened on January,3,1999 And we have heard the same stories from other people who live around here it's never seen just by one but by at least 3 to 8 people at a time all it does is stands there for awhile and then goes walking away and people watch it till it's out of sight.
Wow, Diane, what a frightening experience you had in 1999! You know... what you describe reminds me of things I have heard about Harlequin entities, too? Have you ever heard of these? I usually hear of only one person at a time seeing/experiencing Hatman but there are accounts of multiple witnesses of the Harlequin entity. In the Harlequin accounts I've come across, the entity (whatever it/he/she is) usually attempts to be interactive, deliberately with those who see it, moves around a lot - often people run away from it. Generally, with a Harlequin, people run away and the Harlequin doesn't just stroll past and away like you mention the Hatman-like being did in 1999. The mimicking you mention here is another thing that made me think of the Harlequin possibility.

Hi. I guess my husband and I had a dealing with one of these "ghost" ,but we get it to go away. We scared it. This was years ago. I DIDN'T KNOW EVERYONE WAS SEEING HIM!
